About
Sarah Detty is an LMHC working in Buffalo, New York. Sarah attended Canisius College for graduate school, becoming an M.S. in School Counseling in 2015 and receiving her Advanced Certificate in Mental Health Counseling in 2021. She began her counseling career in Boston, Massachusetts working for a nonprofit contracted with Child Protective Services with the goal of reunifying children and adolescents experiencing behavioral and mental health challenges with biological families where possible.
She served in this capacity for three and a half years, working with both the minors and their families using a combination of Collaborative Problem Solving, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Solution-Focused modalities. Sarah returned to Western New York in 2019 to re-attend graduate school. While progressing through her Advanced Certificate in Mental Health Counseling, she worked as a Care Coordinator for a local nonprofit, helping to connect Medicaid patients with needed resources and treatment in the community. She transitioned into the role of Mental Health Counselor in 2021, working with adults with substance use disorders, serious and persistent mental illnesses, personality disorders, and other mental health disorders. Sarah continues to work part-time in community mental health, as well as in private practice with Shurmatz Counseling.
